Madhuri’s director blames critics over ”Aaja Nachle”

MUMBAI (Reuters) – The director of "Aaja Nachle", Madhuri Dixit's comeback film, has blamed critics for hurting the film at the box office through their negative reviews.

The much-hyped film narrates the story of a divorced New York-based choreographer who returns to India to save a theatre, where she learnt her first moves, from demolition.

It marks the return of Dixit, Bollywood's dancing queen, after a six-year hiatus and was eagerly awaited by her fans as well as the industry.

But critics panned "Aaja Nachle", which opened last week, blaming its loose plot for the film's failure to connect with the audiences.

"Many of us read what the critics have to say before going to the theatres and with such negative reviews coming out, it has automatically hurt the film badly," director Anil Mehta said.

"Reviews like this create a very bad word-of-mouth and that is what has happened," he said.

Despite the film's average first weekend opening at the box office, Mehta said he was hopeful that ticket sales would pick up during the week.

"I'm hoping that people will go to the theatres and see the film for themselves," he said. "I believe that no matter what the critics write, people will surely go and watch Madhuri's comeback film at least once."

The Spice Girls have opened their reunion world tour with a sell-out concert in Vancouver, Canada.

More than 15,000 fans watched Victoria Beckham, Emma Bunton, Melanie Chisholm, Melanie Brown and Geri Halliwell on stage for the first time in nine years.

Their last tour date as a five-piece was in Birmingham in 1998, shortly before Halliwell left the group.

The singers, who announced their comeback in June, have spent the past three weeks rehearsing for the tour.

'Just fantastic

Sunday's gig, at the General Motors Place in Vancouver, marked the start of a sell-out tour which comes to the UK later this month.

The two-hour show saw the stars perform 22 tracks, including their nine UK number one singles, and new single Headlines.

They had eight costume changes during the evening, opening with Spice Up Your Life and dancing on raised platforms.

The group ended the concert with a rendition of Wannabe, their debut single, and a reprise of Spice Up Your Life.

Some fans had travelled from as far away as Italy for the gig.

Marlaine Huery, 19, from Medicine Hat in Alberta, Canada, drove for three hours and flew across the Rockies to see her idols, paying about £750 for the experience.

"I can't believe I am here but it was so worth it," she said. "It has been a lifelong dream of mine.

"I was crying for the first half-hour of the show and I paid a fortune for my ticket, but if they come on tour again I would spend it again. They were just fantastic."

David Beckham made an unexpected appearance, having flown from New Zealand, where he was on tour with his football team LA Galaxy.

In the coming months, the five will also perform in Los Angeles, San Jose, Las Vegas, New York, Cape Town, London, Madrid, Shanghai and Beijing.

Last month the Spice Girls made their first public performance since reforming when they sang their new single Headlines for the BBC's Children in Need charity appeal from Los Angeles.

When the group first began storming the charts they sold 55 million albums and had nine UK number one singles.

Actress Dame Helen Mirren has won best actress at the European Film Academy awards in Berlin for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen.

However, the movie – which had been up for six awards – lost out to Romanian drama 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days in the best film category.

Cristian Mungiu, who made the low-budget production, said he was "honoured" to win best director too.

Israeli actor Sasson Gabai won best actor for his role in The Band's Visit.

The comedy, which was directed by Eran Kolirin, is about an Egyptian police band lost in an Israeli city.

The People's Choice Award went to Italian director Giuseppe Tornatore's La Sconosciuta (The Unknown).

Mungiu's 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, which follows the harrowing journey of two women as they seek an illegal abortion in Communist Romania, also won the Palme d'Or at this year's Cannes Film Festival.

French filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard was honoured with a lifetime achievement award.

Next year the ceremony will be held in Copenhagen
